Flood disaster responses tested

The emergency services will test their response to a flooding disaster

Emergency planners are taking part in an exercise to test procedures for a major flooding crisis in Tayside.

The full-scale exercise, involving 150 volunteers, is taking part at Monikie Country Park in Angus.

It is a chance for those in the area's three local authorities and emergency services to assess what resources may be needed in a real emergency.

Heavy downpours at the beginning of September resulted in some Tayside residents being flooded out of homes.

Organised by the Tayside Strategic Co-Ordinating Group, the exercise involves police, fire and ambulance staff being led through the different stages of a flooding incident - from rescue and evacuation, to dealing with the aftermath of a major flood.

Deputy chief fire officer Alasdair Hay, from Tayside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Major flood incidents may not be frequent, but their effects can be devastating and we need to prepare for them."

Insp Paul Scobbie, who is in charge of emergency planning for Tayside Police, added: "The exercise simulated a major flood event to test how well all the organisations involved can work together.

"It was a challenging scenario of a severe flood affecting a number of different locations. Just like a real event, the circumstances and challenges faced were continually changing as in a real event and tested our capabilities and capacity to work together."
